Lower back discomfort can make spending the day in bed tempting. For many common episodes, however, prolonged bed rest is not recommended. This guide explains how to pace everyday activity, when to seek medical care and what to prepare before an individual consultation in Singapore.
HealthHub advises against staying in bed for the whole day with low back pain. Short rests may be needed, but complete inactivity is not the usual goal. Back pain is a symptom with different possible causes, so general self-care guidance cannot tell you which condition you have. Read HealthHub's low back pain guidance.
Rather than starting a demanding exercise programme, consider small changes to ordinary tasks:
HealthHub recommends moving within pain limits and returning to usual activities gradually. This does not mean pushing through worsening symptoms. If a movement causes new or increasing pain, stop and seek professional advice about a suitable next step. Read HealthHub's self-help tips for pain.
Seek emergency medical care for back pain with new bladder or bowel difficulties, loss of feeling around the genitals or anus, or weakness or numbness in both legs. Back pain after a serious accident also needs emergency assessment. Seek urgent medical advice if pain is severe and worsening quickly or you feel feverish and unwell.
Arrange a medical assessment if symptoms are not improving over a few weeks, interfere with everyday activities or are accompanied by unexplained weight loss. Do not wait for a routine TCM appointment when urgent assessment is needed. See the NHS back pain guidance for further warning signs.
At Annie Tiang TCM, an individual assessment comes before discussion of care. Acupuncture or tuina may be considered according to symptoms, health history and suitability. TCM assessment uses a traditional clinical framework; it is separate from the public-health movement and safety guidance above. Treatment responses vary, and TCM does not replace necessary medical care.
Before your visit, note when symptoms started, whether they followed an injury, what makes them better or worse, and whether they affect sleep, work or walking. Bring relevant medical reports and a current medication list. You can ask what the proposed care involves, its risks and alternatives, and when symptoms should be reviewed.
